Love Unrequited
I
How can I describe?
The first virginal blossom,
Of true love's caress.
A downy velvet,
Frigid tingles up warm spine,
A taste of heaven.
Intertwin'd fingers,
Love's tender affliction,
Remembered always.
Walking together,
Savouring the fruits of spring,
Those stolen moments.
Illicit passions,
Promises of things to come,
Of future springtimes.
Daring me to dream,
Of what possibilities
Could possibly be.
II
But this dream is doomed,
Dashed on the unyielding rocks
Of reality.
For who'm I to dare,
Presume to sup this nectar
The Gods' ambrosia?
For who'm I to dare,
I the Benjamite to take
The Sabine women?
For who'm I to dare
Assault Persephone's survey
I, blighted Hades?
For who'm I to dare,
Plead the angel's acceptance
Of Cain's sacrifice?
For who'm I to dare,
Request the Beauty's embrace,
of ugly Beast?
No! No! Again No!
Far be it from lowly me!
To force of myself.
On the divine one,
Who captured my heart's desire,
And kept it always.
Never will I dare
Insult her ears with the plea
Of my heart's longing.
Though my heart cries out
For the pleasure of relief,
I'll suppress my soul.
For to profane her
Pure perfection with my stain,
Is anathema.
III
Love's heavy burden,
Despairs my soul, tears asunder
And never lets go.
Love's heavy burden,
Is one I'll carry, even
as love poisons me.
Love's heavy burden,
Is one I'd willingly bear,
My Sisyphus' stone.
Love's a fool's folly,
A trap to confound the wise,
Both blessing and curse.
Delicious poison
To burn the tongue and belly
Of presumptuous Eve.
The honeyed parchment
That sweetens the lips, and yet
Turns the stomach sour.
And though it scalds me
I will still nurture the flames
And keep love alive.
In forlorn mem'ry,
Of those sweet days in the sun,
Of what might have been.
